Mid Staffs Charters President’s Evening Wednesday 14th November 2018

President David Boote, Speaker Alan & Dora Appleby“Restoration Man and Woman

The story behind the conversion of the Flint Mill at Stone”

As part of our charters programme of events, once a year we hold a Presidents Evening which is the club’s social event held at the Moat House Acton Trussell.

Traditionally we have a speaker and this year Alan Appleby, a local Chartered Surveyor and RICS Registered Valuer agreed to talk to us about his new home which has been a restoration project of the Old Flint Mill, Stone.

The title “Restoration Man” comes from the channel 4 programme which featured Alan’s project.

The mill was built in the 1770s and produced flint for the manufacture of porcelain.

Research has shown that much of the flint produced was used by Josiah Wedgewood in his factory.

The Mill had lain abandoned for over 50 years and had become a dumping ground for fly tippers.

Alan’s presentation explained how, with his wife Dora, they had restored this old mill in to a modern family home full of the latest technology, whilst at the same time retaining the buildings history and character.

This was an excellent, enthusiastically received presentation; we thank Alan for his time and wish them well in their new home.

For more information about the project see

In the photograph, our President David Boote is thanking Alan and Dora for joining us for the evening.
